Surah 56. Surah al Waqi’ah (The Event)
Bismillah ir Rahman ir Raheem
In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
- When what is to happen (the Event) shall happen;
- No denial is there in its happening;
- Humbling, exalting.
- When the earth starts to tremble, trembling,
- And the mountains are pulverized, pulverizing,
- And become scattered dust,
- And you are (sorted into) three groups.
- Then, the people on the right—
How (happy) are the people on the right! - And, people on the left,
How (miserable) are the people on the left! - And those who are foremost (in virtue), are foremost (in the hereafter);
- They are the ones who are close (to Divine presence),
- In Gardens of bliss;
- A large group from among the ancients,
- And a few from later times;
- Upon thrones of gold embroidery,
- Reclining therein, facing each other.
- Around them will be youths, immortal,
- With goblets and ewers,
And cups filled with clear drinks (with no impurity)— - No headache will there be from it, and no delirium;
- And fruits from what they prefer;
- And meat of birds they desire;
- And companions pure with eyes (reflecting Divine grace)—
- The likeness of which are pearls, hidden—
- A recompense for what they used to do.
- No vain talk shall they hear therein,
And no evil conversation, - Except the words of peace! peace!
- And the people on the right—
How (happy) are the people on the right! - Amidst Lote trees, without thorns;
- And spathes, stacked up;
- And shadows, long;
- And water, in continuous flow;
- And fruits plentiful;
- Limitless, not forbidden;
- And upon thrones raised up.
- Indeed, We created them, a gracious creation.
- Then, We made them (companions) pure,
- Loving, of the same age—
- (This) for the people on the right,
- Many from among the ancients,
- And many from the later times.
- And the people on the left,
How (miserable) are the people on the left! - In blistering hot wind and boiling putrid fluid;
- And in the shadow of smoke,
- Without coolness and without blessing.
- Verily, they lived in luxury aforetime,
- And they were persistent in great sins.
- And they used to say:
“When we are dead, and have become dust and bones,
Will we then be raised up again? - And will our ancient forefathers too?”
- Say: “Indeed, the earliest ones and the last ones,
- Will be among those gathered together,
On a Day known (to Allah) at the Time of meeting. - Then, verily, O you who have gone astray and are in denial!
- Of a certainty, you will eat from the tree of Zaqqum,
- And with it fill up your stomachs,
- And after it, drink from a boiling putrid fluid,
- And drink, like thirsty camels.”
- This is their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
- We have created you, so why do you not accept it as the truth?
- (O men!) Have you considered what you emit (as your semen)?
- Do you create it, or, We are its Creator?
- We have ordained death among you,
And We are not to be frustrated - From transforming your likeness,
And recreate you (in a state)
Of which you have no knowledge. - And verily, you have known the first creation,
Then, why do you not remember? - Do you not see (and reflect upon) what you sow?
- Is it you that makes it grow,
Or (are) We the ones making it grow? - If We so will, We will make it dried stubble,
Then you will be confounded (bewildered and stagger), - (Saying): ” Indeed, We are ruined!
- No, we are denied (our food).”
- Do you not see (and reflect upon) what you drink?
- Was it you who brought it down from the clouds
Or We the ones who brought it down? - If We so willed, We would have made it bitter,
So, why are you not thankful? - Do you not see (and reflect upon) the fire that you lit?
- Is it you who created the trees for it,
Or We the ones who created them? - We made it a remembrance, and a benefit for the travelers,
- Therefore, extol the Name of your Rabb, the Supreme!
- So, I take an oath by the breaking up of the stars—
- And it is a momentous oath, if you comprehend it—
- Verily, this is the blessed Qur’an,
- From the Book preserved—
- They do not touch it except the pure (of heart)—
- Sent down by the Rabb of all the worlds.
- Are you then rejecters of this discourse?
- And you make your rejection your provision (for the hereafter)?
- Then, why (do you) not (intervene) when it (the soul) reaches the throat?
- And you stare (confounded) at that time?
- And We are closer to him (the dying man) than you but you do not perceive,
- Then, why (do you) not, if you are excused from Divine punishment,
- Bring it back, if you are truthful?
- So, for such as those close (to Divine presence),
- (For such) there is felicity and provision, and Gardens of bliss.
- And if he is from the people on the right,
- Then there is the greeting: “Peace be with you”,
From people on the right. - And if he is from those who deny and go astray,
- Then his welcome is in a boiling, putrid water,
- And he is thrown into the Fire.
- Indeed, this is what is the truth and the certainty,
- So, extol the Name of your Rabb, the Supreme!
